Access to Denali National Park

Q: Can you drive a rental car into Denali National Park or is Denali access only by tour bus?

A: You can only drive a car on the Park Road as far as Savage River, 14 miles into Denali National Park. Further access into the park is by shuttle bus or on a tour bus. We recommend the Kantishna Wilderness Trails tour which travels the full lenghth of the Park Road. The National Park Service does offer a “road lottery” that allows private vehicles on the Park Road during one weekend in September.

Evening Tours in Denali

Q: Are there any short evening bus tours in Denali in mid June? We will arrive in Denali around 5:30pm.

A: The last shuttle bus into the park leaves promptly at 5:00pm. Keep in mind you can drive a private car 14 miles into the park to the Savage River area. This is a beautiful area for a light hike. Other evening tour options include guided hiking, rafting, dog sled tours and the Cabin Nite Dinner Theater.

Anchorage Airport to Seward

Q: I will be traveling from Anchorage airport to Seward in late May or early June. Do you provide airport pickup or dropoff?

A: We do not offer transportation directly from the Anchorage airport. The Park Connection Motorcoach offers two departures daily to Seward from downtown Anchorage. A taxi from the airport to downtown Anchorage costs about $20-$25. The 7:00am departure leaves from the Egan Convention Center and the 3:00pm departure leaves from the Anchorage Museum. Park Connection Motorcoach service arriving into Anchorage does drop off at the airport.

Advance Reservations in Alaska

Q: I am planning on visiting in May. Do I need to make advance reservations?

A: Even though May is considered the shoulder season, there are still many visitors coming to Alaska during this time. I absolutely would recommend advance reservations for hotels, transportation and tours. Some hotels aren’t open in May, particularly in Denali so although there are fewer visitors there are also fewer lodging options available. Tours may operate on a slightly different schedule early in the season so booking in advance ensures that you have accurate information before you arrive.

Cruise Arrival in Seward

Q: We are arriving at Seward by cruise ship 12pm. Would we be able to take train at 6:00 to Anchorage same day??

A: Yes, you can take the Alaska Railroad from Seward at 6:00pm the day your cruise ship arrives. The train depot opens at 10:00am. You can drop your luggage at the depot after your cruise and they will store it. You could wander the town or go on a tour. We offer day cruises to Kenai Fjords National Park, visits to the SeaLife Center or the IdidaRide Sled Dog tour.

Transportation to Alaska

Q: Is there a railway connection between Alaska and Canada?

A: There is not a train that goes through Canada to Alaska. If you do not want to fly to Alaska, you should consider cruising to Alaska or driving the Alcan Highway.

Denali Tours

Q: If I want to see wildlife and Mt. McKinley, what is the best tour in Denali- the Tundra Wilderness tour or the Kantishna Trails tour?

A: I would recommend the bus Kantishna Wilderness Trails Tour for optimal wildlife viewing and Mt. McKinley. This tour travels the full length of the Denali Park road. The longer you are on the road the better chance you have of seeing wildlife.

Fishing in Denali

Q: We are staying in Denali. Is there inexpensive fishing there? At Wonder Lake?

A: For a local guide outfit at Denali Park I would suggest contacting Denali Fly Fishing Guides. They offer fishing in several fresh water lakes and tributaries near Denali. Fishing isn’t offered at Wonder Lake or anywhere within the National Park. All the fishing in the Denali area would be for species of Trout. If you are interested in Salmon fishing I would recommend the Talkeetna area which is a few hours south of Denali Park.

Transportation between Seward and Whittier

Q: Are there any connections between Seward and Whittier or do you have to go back to Anchorage?

A: There is no regularly scheduled transportation service offered between Seward and Whittier unless you go through Anchorage. It may even be difficult to make this connection in one day. The Park Connection only goes into Whittier on Princess Cruise ship days. Please check our schedule to see if this works for your schedule.

The other choice is to look for a private type hire like a limo service or taxi cab. There are limited services out of Seward so any limo service would originate out of Anchorage so may cost quite a bit.
