Bus Departure Locations

Q: We are flying into Anchorage, Alaska at 2am and trying to get to Denali to visit our daughter. Does your morning bus pick up at the airport?

A: The Park Connection does not offer departures from the Anchorage airport. The 7AM bus from Anchorage to Denali  departs from the Egan Convention Center in downtown Anchorage. A cab is the best way to get to the Egan Center from the Airport and it takes about 15 to 20 minutes.

Alaska Passport Requirements

Q: I am a U.S. citizen. Do I need a passport to visit Alaska?

A: This is a tricky question! It all depends on how you are getting to Alaska. If you are flying to and from Alaska you do not need a passport. If you are arriving in Alaska via a cruise you will need a passport as most Alaskan bound cruises start in Vancouver, BC. Beginning in 2008, travel between Canada and the United States now requires a passport. Traveling to Alaska by car would also require a passport because you have to travel through Canada.

Exit Glacier Tour Transportation

Q: I have made a booking for the Exit Glacier Tour and will be staying at Best Western Edgewater Hotel, Seward. Is there any shuttle service to Windsong lodge for the tour?.

A: The Seward Windsong Lodge offers shuttle service for Exit Glacier tour passengers. The shuttle stops at the Small Boat Harbor in downtown and the Sealife Center every half hour or so. The Sealife Center is walking distance from the Best Western Edgewater Hotel. I would recommend getting on the shuttle an hour prior to your tour time. You can also call the Windsong Lodge at 907-224-7116 during the summer months for more exact shuttle times.

Fairbanks to Anchorage Transportation Options

Q: I will be working in Fairbanks next summer and want to visit family in Anchorage for a weekend. Is that possible?

A: If just visiting Anchorage for a weekend I would recommend flying from Fairbanks. The flight is about an hour. Driving time between Fairbanks and Anchorage ranges from 6 to 8 hours depending on traffic and construction. The train travels between Fairbanks and Anchorage daily during the summer months however, it departs Fairbanks at 8:15 AM and has a duration of 12 hour so may not be practical for a weekend visit. You could travel by train one way and air the other.

Car Ferry in Alaska

Q: Can I take a car ferry to go from Juneau or Haines to Whittier, Seward or Anchorage?

A: There is a ferry that you can take your car on to travel around Southeast Alaska and then to Southcentral Alaska. Our company does not book for the ferry, but we would recommend Alaska Ferry Adventures for additional information.

Rail to Anchorage from Cruise

Q: I will be arriving in Seward by cruise on September 3rd. What time does the train depart Seward for Anchorage?

A: The train to Anchorage from Seward departs at 6:00pm. This would give you time to enjoy a Seward day tour. The Alaska Railroad or a tour operator could store your luggage for the day.

Rental Cars on the Denali Highway

Q: Can we drive our rental car on Denali Hwy Rte 8?

A: The Denali Highway runs 135 miles between Cantwell and Paxson and is a gravel highway with few services and few travelers. Most rental car companies do not allow travel on the Denali Highway. You can take the Glenn and George Parks highways to get to Cantwell. If Paxson is your destination you can take the Glenn and Richardson Highways. If Denali National Park is your intended destination you take the George Parks Highway to Denali and then the Denali Park road leads into the park. This road is only open to mile 15 for private vehicles. Travel further into the National Park is by bus.

Anchorage Daylight Hours in July

Q: When does the sun come up in Anchorage in July?

A: In early July the sunrise is around 4:30am and the sunset is around 11:30pm. By the end of July the sunrise is around 5:30am and sunset is around 10:40pm. Summer solstice is June 21st so we start to lose daylight during July.

Denali Junior Ranger Program

Q: I am bringing my 7 year old granddaughter to Denali National Park in June 2011. Is there a Jr. Ranger program there?

A: They do have a great junior ranger program at Denali National Park. If you are looking for some family friendly tours to do while in Denali please visit our Family Vacation page.

Alaska Rail Service Area

Q: Is rail service available between Vancouver and Ketchikan?

A: Unfortunately there isn’t a train that you can take from Canada and into Alaska. The Alaska Railroad system doesn’t connect with any other rail system and it does not operate in Southeast Alaska at all. It only operates within Alaska between Fairbanks, Denali, Talkeetna, Anchorage, Whittier and Seward.
