Alaska Railroad Service

Q: I have booked a cruise from Vancouver to Anchorage and I would like to return to Vancouver via your famous Alaska Rail. Please let me know the schedule and fares for travel between Anchorage and Vancouver.

A: The Alaska Railroad service is only operated in Alaska. There is train service daily between Anchorage and Seward and between Anchorage and Fairbanks during the summer months. The Alaska Railroad does not offer any other service to include your requested route between Vancouver and Alaska. The best option for traveling back to Vancouver would be by air.

I would recommend that you stay an additional few days after your cruise to take the Alaska Railroad to Denali. It is a nice addition to your week long cruise to Alaska. The interior of Alaska is much different than your cruise and offers even more chances to see our magnificent beauty as well as some of our big game wildlife. We offer some great post-cruise vacation packages to explore more of Alaska.

Alaska Reservations for International Travellers

Q: We are not U.S. citizens, nor do we live in the United States. Can we make reservations through your company?

A: We are able to book your Alaska vacation for you regardless of where you are from. We can book complete land packages and can book Alaska cruises with Royal Caribbean Cruise Line or Celebrity Cruises.

Transportation to Kenai

Q: I would like to travel to Kenai, Alaska by bus. Can you tell me how much that costs?

A: Unfortunately, we do not offer a bus that goes to Kenai. The only way to get to Kenai is to either fly in from Anchorage or drive. You can rent a car in Anchorage and drive down – it is about a three hour drive. There is no scheduled bus or train service to the city of Kenai.

Denali to Whittier By Bus

Q: Is it possible to catch a coach from Denali to Whittier to arrive in Whittier in time to depart at 11.30pm by ferry? Our ferry date is the 4th of June, 2012.

A: The Park Connection only goes to Whittier on Princess cruise ship days. Luckily, the 4th of June is a cruise ship day, so we would be able to get you from Denali to Whittier in one day. We generally leave Denali about 8am and arrive into Anchorage about 1:30-2pm. Then we depart from Anchorage at 3pm for Whittier. It is only about 60 miles. We travel through the Whittier tunnel during the 4:30-4:45pm opening and arrive in Whittier about 5:00pm.

Alaska Railroad Tickets

Q: We would like to travel by train from Fairbanks to Anchorage, but spend a full day in Denali National Park. Can we buy one Fairbanks to Anchorage ticket, or do we need to buy Fairbanks-Denali, then Denali-Anchorage?

A: If you are taking the train on two different days you would buy two separate tickets, one for each segment. If you travel on Adventure Class then the price is the same regardless of how you purchase the ticket. The fare for Gold Star service is a bit higher when you purchase the individual travel segments.

Transportation to and from Fairbanks Alaska

Q: Can we fly into Anchorage, ride the train to Fairbanks and fly home from Fairbanks?

A: You can ride the Alaska Railroad from Anchorage to Fairbanks. You can choose from standard service or the Gold Star service. There are some flights that go direct from Fairbanks to destinations in the lower 48 states, but they are more limited than flying out of Anchorage. There are many flights daily between Anchorage and Fairbanks and the flight time is just under an hour. You could certainly take the railroad to Fairbanks and then fly to Anchorage and then on to your final destination.

Alaska Park Connection Bus

Q: Does the Park Connection bus have a bathroom?
A: The Park Connection Motorcoaches do have restrooms on board. The coaches are highway quality deluxe motorcoaches with comfortable seating, ample leg room and large picture windows.

Alaska Glaciers

Q: My daughter really wants to get up close with a glacier. Is it possible to land on one, touch one or something like that?

A: Alaska is the place to come to get up close with glaciers. There are many options including flightseeing with glacier landings in Talkeetna or Denali, glacier day cruises and the Exit Glacier tour in Seward. On a glacier day cruise the boats pull up to the glaciers then stop so you can awe at them calving into the water.

We also offer a tour that includes glacier dog sledding. If you are renting a car during your Alaska vacation another unique option is a visit to Matanuska Glacier.

Alaska Weather in May

Q: Can you please tell me how is the weather in Southeast Alaska in May? Places like Juneau, Skagway, Glacier Bay National Park, and Ketchikan – will it be very cold in May?

A: It sounds as if you will be on a cruise in May. Alaska weather is fairly unpredictable but May is a good time to travel in Alaska as everything is turning green and we have long hours of daylight. Follow this link to an informative Alaska weather blog. I would also recommend viewing our weather information page to get an idea of the average temperatures and daylight hours throughout our state.

Winter Cruises

Q: Do you offer any cruises departing Anchorage on December 26, 2011?

A: There are no cruises that operate in Alaska during the winter months. Cruise lines move their ships to warmer climates for the winter. Alaska cruises only do sailings between mid-May and mid-September. Southbound cruises depart from either Seward or Whittier which are within driving distance of Anchorage.
