Talkeetna in April

Q: Is the Talkeetna Alaska Lodge open April 29? Is flight seeing available then?

A: I’m sorry the lodge is closed until May 20th but flight seeing is available in Talkeetna year around. We highly recommend K2 Aviation. You can easily drive to Talkeetna for the day and return to Anchorage after the flight. Another option would be to check on Talkeetna area bed & breakfasts to see if they are open in April.

Senior Citizen Discounts

Q: Are there any senior citizens discounts for marine highway tours, flightseeing, raft trips?

A: All tours offered by Alaska Tour and Travel are available at a standard adult rate and a standard child rate. We do not offer any senior citizen or military rates. The Alaska Marine Highway System does offer senior rates on some routes.

Best Views of Mt. McKinley

Q: Where can I see the best views of Mt. McKinley?
A: From within Denali National Park and also from South Denali, near the town of Talkeetna. Of course in either location your being able to view Mt. McKinley will be subject to weather and cloud coverage. We recommend doing one of the all day bus tours into Denali National Park or one of the flightseeing tours over the park to best view the mountain. In Talkeetna the best way to view Mt. McKinley is by air, thus we recommend doing one of the flightseeing tours that are offered. Both the Talkeetna Alaska Lodge and Mt. McKinley Princess Lodge have excellent views of Mt. McKinley from their decks on a clear day.

Glacier Viewing

Q: Where can I go see glaciers if I don’t like to go out on boats?
A: Alaska has many glaciers that are visible without taking a boat. One of the best ways to see glaciers is from the air. In Talkeetna we offer scenic flights over the Alaska Range which has some of Alaska’s largest land locked glaciers. In Seward, Exit Glacier is part of Kenai Fjords National Park and can be visited by just a short walk from the visitor center. Glaciers can also be seen from many of the state’s roads including the Seward, Glenn, and Richardson Highways.

Tours Options in Denali Park

Q: In addition to bus trips into Denali Park, what other activities should we consider while we are there?
A: Denali Park offers many great activities, including guided hiking, rafting, Iditarod dog kennel tours, dinner theatres and scenic flights by either helicopter or fixed wing planes.

Weather Cancellations

Q: What happens if my day cruise or flightseeing tour is not able to depart due to weather?
A: Normally, if any of our tours are cancelled by the provider due to a weather issue they will notify us of the cancellation and we will refund you directly. Be sure to contact us once you get home to confirm.

Denali National Park Tours from McKinley Princess Wilderness Lodge

Q: We booked our trip through a travel agent. I noticed we are staying at McKinley Princess Lodge, but have a McKinley Glacier Landing by Airplane tour with a pickup from the McKinley Chalets. Transportation to McKinley Chalets is at our own expense. We were wondering how far we have to go and if McKinley Princess Lodge has a shuttle to go their or if we have to rent a vehicle. ?
A: McKinley Princess Lodge is located at Mile 133 of the Parks Highway in an area known as Denali State Park. The McKinley Chalets is located at Mile 238 of the Parks Highway just outside the entrance to Denali National Park. There are no transportation options from McKinley Princess to the McKinley Chalets that you can take for a day trip. If you wanted to do flightseeing from McKinley Princess Lodge, you would be much better off booking a flightseeing tour out of Talkeetna which is located about an hour south of McKinley Princess Lodge. Princess does operate a shuttle from McKinley Princess down to Talkeetna which they charge a $10 fee to utilize..

McKinley Princess has beautiful views of Mt. McKinley but there is no access to the Park. But, there are some great day excursions that can be taken from McKinley Princess such as kayaking or hiking at Byer’s Lake. We book McKinley Princess but only in combination with a stay near Denali National Park as well. That way they can take a tour into the Park such as the Tundra Wilderness Tour or Kantishna Wilderness Tour
