Meals on Denali and Kenai Fjords Tour Package

Q: Are there any meals included in the Denali Park and Kenai Fjords Combo tour?

A: Generally speaking, most of the land packages on our website are self-guided and do not include meals, however two activities on the Denali Park and Kenai Fjords vacation package include a meal. The Kantishna Wilderness trails tour and the Kenai Fjords day cruise include meals.

Aurora Borealis Alaska

Q: When is the best time to see the aurora borealis?

A: The best time to view the aurora borealis (also known as the northern lights) is during the winter months in Fairbanks, Alaska. However, if you want to see the wildlife in Denali National Park and the glaciers of Kenai Fjords National Park in addition to the aurora borealis then I would recommend visiting Alaska in early to mid-September. We offer a tour to the Arctic Circle from Fairbanks that would offer you the best opportunity to see the northern lights.

Seward in a Day

Q: Is it possible to go on a day cruise in Seward if we are arriving and departing by rail?

A: If you are taking the train to Seward you will arrive in enough time to catch a 6 hour cruise into Kenai Fjords National Park. The day cruise companies in Seward send their shuttles to meet the train and pick up people who will be doing their cruises. This cruise returns at 5:30pm so you could catch the 6pm train to return to Anchorage. The timing on this is pretty tight and makes for a long day. I would recommend going to Seward by rail and returning to Anchorage by bus. This return trip would depart Seward at 6:30pm and arrive in Anchorage by 9:30pm, over an hour before the train.

Length of Alaska Vacation

Q: What is the minimum time to spend in Alaska to see wildlife in Denali and glaciers in Seward?

A: At a minimum you would want to allot one night in Anchorage upon arrival, two nights in Denali, and one night in Seward. This itinerary would include rail to Denali, a full day wildlife tour in Denali National Park, a bus from Denali to Seward and a 6 hour glacier and wildlife cruise in Seward. Visit our tour packages page to see sample itineraries. Keep in mind that any itinerary can be altered to suit your time limits and tour choices.

Cruise Arrival in Seward

Q: We are arriving at Seward by cruise ship 12pm. Would we be able to take train at 6:00 to Anchorage same day??

A: Yes, you can take the Alaska Railroad from Seward at 6:00pm the day your cruise ship arrives. The train depot opens at 10:00am. You can drop your luggage at the depot after your cruise and they will store it. You could wander the town or go on a tour. We offer day cruises to Kenai Fjords National Park, visits to the SeaLife Center or the IdidaRide Sled Dog tour.

Best Transportation Options between Denali Park and Anchorage

Q: My family and I are planning a trip to Alaska this summer. In researching vacation packages online I see that some companies seem to recommend traveling between Anchorage and Denali Park roundtrip by train, while others recommend roundtrip by motorcoach. I notice that you offer both train and motorcoach options. Can you help us choose which will be best for us? We also want to go to Seward and Kenai Fjords National Park.

A: We recommend vacation packages using a combination of both rail and motorcoach. Generally, travelers fly into Anchorage so we suggest taking the train to Denali and then returning to Anchorage by bus. Our packages are completely customizable so you can reverse that itinerary if you want. The combination of motorcoach and rail gives you the best of both worlds. You can enjoy the scenery offered by both the rail belt and the roadway routes. On the train, enjoy wandering between the cars and take advantage of the dining experience. The Park Connection Motorcoach offers a faster, less expensive option and offers photo stops which is not an option on the train! Another great advantage of the motorcoach is that you can travel between Denali and Seward in one day. On your return to Anchorage from Seward, we recommend you travel by train as that trip is one of the most beautiful on the Alaska rail system and follows a completely different route than the road.

Alaska Whale Watching

Q: When is the best time of year to see whales?

A: The best time to visit Alaska for whale viewing would depend on what types of whales you would like to see. The spring is excellent for seeing gray whales during their migration period. Gray whale cruises generally start in April. June, July and August are great months for viewing Orca whales particularly out of Resurrection Bay in Seward, Alaska. I would recommend a glacier and wildlife day cruise out of Seward. Whale watching is also popular in Southeast Alaska so you may want to visit the Travel Juneau website for additional information about their whale season.

Seward Luggage Storage

Q: We arrive in Seward on the train at 11:05am. Our cruise leaves at 8pm. Is there a place to store luggage during the day?

A: Unfortunately there are no lockers at the rail depot in Seward. I would recommend taking a boat tour through the Kenai Fjords National Park for the day because the tour companies store luggage for you while you are on their tour. You would get to see the national park up close on a smaller boat (you don’t really see it on your cruise).
Another option would be to take a taxi from the depot to the cruise ship and drop your luggage off there. You would then be free to visit the town of Seward. For other tour options please visit our Seward tours page. If you want a transfer direct to the cruise ship, consider taking the Park Connection motorcoach service from Anchorage.

Kenai Fjords National Park

Q: Can you drive from Seward to the Kenai Fjords National Park or do you have to take a day Cruise?

A: Seward is the entrance of the Kenai Fjords National Park. A Fjord is an area of land that has been carved out by glaciers and filled with water. So in essence to truly see the Kenai Fjord National Park you would need to go on a boat cruise. See our Kenai Fjords cruises page for tour options.

Whale Watching Season

Q: When is the best time to see whales in Alaska?
A: Alaska Tour & Travel offers many day cruises out of the Seward area that have great whale viewing. Killer Whales are present in Alaska May thru September. For Gray and Humpback Whale viewing April and May are the best times but they are often seen all summer.
