Rail from Whittier, Alaska

Q: We will be arriving in Whittier on a cruise ship, Saturday, August 23rd, at 12:30 a.m. Is there a Saturday train scheduled from Whittier to Anchorage?

A: Your cruise will arrive at 12:30am, however they will not start disembarkation until later that morning. The train from Whittier to Anchorage does not leave until 6:45pm. If you want to get to Anchorage earlier we have a motorcoach that would leave directly from the cruise ship dock at 9:45am.

WIFI on Alaska Rail?

Q: Does the Wilderness train offer internet service to travelers?

A: I’m sorry but none of the train services have WIFI available on board. The train travels through some remote areas so cellular phone coverage will be sporadic as well.

Denali Rail and Bus Tour

Q: We are planning a trip to Alaska in July. Can we ride the railway to Denali then take the tour bus from there? And if so, should we make reservations now for the day we want to go or can we just take the tour that day from entrance to park?

A: You would be able to take the train to Denali and then take a bus tour into the park however not all in one day. We recommend at least two nights in Denali – arrive by train, overnight, take a full day bus tour into the Denali National Park, overnight and then depart by bus or train the following day. I would suggest booking the train, hotel, and tour all in advance because availability is starting to become limited.

Seward to Anchorage Train

Q: What time does the morning train leave Seward for Anchorage?

A: The Alaska Railroad train leaves Seward at 6:00PM and arrives in Anchorage at 10:15PM. There is no morning train from Seward to Anchorage. The Park Connection motorcoach does offer a morning departure from Seward that arrives in Anchorage about 1:30PM.

Alaska Railroad Lap Riders

Q: Is a one year old who will be a lap rider charged the same price ticket for a train ride from Anchorage to Seward as a child, or is the one year old discounted?

A: A child rate is for anyone that is 11 years old and younger. Adults rates would be for anyone 12 years and older. However, if you intend to keep a child under the age of 2 on your lap there would be no fee for them on the Alaska Railroad. The Park Connection does charge for children under 2 because they are required to have their own seat in a car seat.

Seward to Anchorage Transportation

Q: I plan on taking the Alaska railroad from Anchorage to Seward. Is there a bus or train that will take me back to Anchorage the next day?

A: I would recommend taking a bus back to Anchorage as it follows a different route than the train for a portion of the trip. This will allow you to see the most scenery. The Park Connection Motorcoach departs twice daily from Seward, once at 10:30am and once at 6:30pm. The train runs back to Anchorage once per day at 6:00pm.

Fairbanks to Vancouver

Q: How can I get from Fairbanks to Vancouver BC without driving or flying?

A: I would recommend taking the Alaska Railroad between Fairbanks and Whittier and a 7-day Alaska cruise between Whittier and Vancouver. You would need two days to do the rail travel with an overnight in Anchorage. The rail from Fairbanks to Anchorage is a twelve hour trip arriving into Anchorage at about 8pm. The next morning you could take the rail from Anchorage to Whittier to board the cruise ship.
