Seward to Whittier Transportation

Q: Is there any kind of transportation from Seward to Whittier?

A: There is no direct transportation from Seward to Whittier either by train or motorcoach. You could try renting a car in Seward with Hertz but I am not sure that they would allow you to drop off the car in Whittier. Your best option would be to take the Park Connection bus to Anchorage and then rent a car from Avis which does allow drop off in Whittier. Good luck!

Alaska Car Rentals

Q: Is an economy class car suitable for driving to Fairbanks, Denali National Park, and Whittier?

A: The size of the car you rent in Alaska depends on the size of your party and the amount of luggage you will have! For a party of two, an economy car is suitable to drive around Alaska. All of the roads you will travel on are paved and in good condition. For larger parties you may need to upgrade to a full size car to fit passengers and luggage

Seward Car Rental

Q: We arrive by cruise ship in Seward in June. Can I hire a car in Seward, drive the car around Alaska for 6 days and leave the car in Anchorage? If not, how can we get to Anchorage to hire a car?

A: You can rent a car in Seward and drop it off in Anchorage with Hertz, however it is fairly expensive. I would suggest taking our Park Connection Motorcoach into Anchorage and rent a car there. Be sure to look at the post cruise land packages we offer.  These packages could be customized to fit your time frame.

Driving Time to Seward Alaska

Q: How many hours does it take to drive from Anchorage to Seward?

A: It is about a 2 1/4 hour drive from Anchorage to Seward. During the summer, expect some road construction somewhere along the Seward Highway to slow down the drive. To be safe, plan on at least 2 1/2 – 3 hours. It’s a beautiful drive, you will enjoy it!

Driving time to Denali

Q: What is the driving time from Anchorage to Denali National Park?

A: It takes about 4 1/2 hours to drive from Anchorage to Denali if you are driving straight through, but it somewhat depends on what time you are leaving Anchorage. Commuting traffic out of Anchorage is at its peak from 4:00pm – 6:00pm which could make the drive take longer.

Access to Denali National Park

Q: Can you drive a rental car into Denali National Park or is Denali access only by tour bus?

A: You can only drive a car on the Park Road as far as Savage River, 14 miles into Denali National Park. Further access into the park is by shuttle bus or on a tour bus. We recommend the Kantishna Wilderness Trails tour which travels the full lenghth of the Park Road. The National Park Service does offer a “road lottery” that allows private vehicles on the Park Road during one weekend in September.

Highways between Seward and Denali

Q: What highway do you take from Seward to drive to Denali?

A: Take the Seward Highway from Seward to Anchorage – it is the only highway out of Seward. Take the Glenn Highway out of Anchorage and then you’ll merge onto the George Parks Highway towards Denali. It may sound like a lot of highways but the Seward Highway and the Glenn Highway are the only highways in and out of Anchorage! You will cover about 250 miles and it will take 7 to 9 hours.

Anchorage Car Rentals

Q: I understand that it’s much cheaper to pick up rental cars in Anchorage, rather than the airport. Are the rental car locations easy to get to from most of the downtown hotels?

A: When you pick up rental cars at the airport you have to pay the airport concession tax. The daily rate for the cars is the same if you pick them up at the airport or if you pick them up at an off airport office. The tax at the airport is 29% while at an off airport location it is 18%. We use Thrifty Rental cars and their off airport office is about 3 miles from the airport. If you are staying at a downtown hotel the Thrifty office will pick you up. If you arrive at the airport and would like to pick up your car immediately, we recommend that you take a taxi from the airport to the rental location. If you use the Thrifty shuttle from the airport you have to pay the airport tax rate.

Anchorage Car Rental Fees

Q: I know that there is an additional tax/fee for renting a car at the Anchorage airport. If we pick up the car at the downtown location – and RETURN it to the airport – do we avoid that extra charge?

A: We use Thrifty for our rental car agency in Anchorage. If you pick a car up from the Thrifty off airport location you can turn it back to the airport but you will have to pay a $15.00 drop off fee. The tax rate will be the off airport rate of 18%.

Glennallen to Palmer Alaska

Q: How far is Glennallen from Palmer?

A: Glennallen is 137 miles from Palmer. You would travel between the two on the Glenn Highway. It is a very scenic drive, but because of the terrain and two lane road I’d plan on about a 3 hour drive between the two towns.
