Fairbanks Gold Dredge Tour

Q: Does the gold dredge tour include transportation from from Fairbanks?

A: Gold Dredge #8 does not include transportation out to the site. If you have the time I would recommend renting a car for one day, this would be the most inexpensive way to get there. You can take a taxi, however it will cost about $100.00 round trip.

Trans-Alaska Pipeline

Q: Is there a tour of the oil pipeline from Anchorage or Denali?

A: The Trans-Alaska Pipeline can be seen on the city tour in Fairbanks and in route to the town of Valdez. Unfortunately, you are unable to see the Pipeline from the Anchorage or Denali areas. There is a great exhibit of the pipeline at the Anchorage Museum.

Fairbanks to Vancouver

Q: How can I get from Fairbanks to Vancouver BC without driving or flying?

A: I would recommend taking the Alaska Railroad between Fairbanks and Whittier and a 7-day Alaska cruise between Whittier and Vancouver. You would need two days to do the rail travel with an overnight in Anchorage. The rail from Fairbanks to Anchorage is a twelve hour trip arriving into Anchorage at about 8pm. The next morning you could take the rail from Anchorage to Whittier to board the cruise ship.

Anchorage to Chena Hot Springs

Q: I want to go from Anchorage to Chena Hot Springs. I’ve already been to Denali and points in between. How do you suggest I travel?

A: You have several options depending on your schedule, your preferred mode of transportation and the number of nights you would like to spend in Fairbanks.

The most direct route is to rent a car in Anchorage and drive to Chena Hot Springs. The Chena Hot springs are located about an hour and a half from Fairbanks on the Chena Hot Springs Road. The drive between Anchorage and Fairbanks is 360 miles and will take about 6-7 hours. It is 419 miles total between Anchorage and Chena Hot Springs.

I would recommend either flying into Fairbanks (50 minute flight) or taking the train from Anchorage. The train ride is beautiful but takes about twelve hours. We offer a day tour to Chena Hot Springs and the Ice Museum. This tour departs from local hotels at about 11:30am and returns to Fairbanks at 6:30pm. It includes narration in route and entrance to the Ice Museum and the hot springs. Snacks and lunch are available at the resort’s restaurant. If you take the train, you would need to spend two nights in Fairbanks. If you fly, this trip could be done as a day trip from Anchorage if you could get an early morning flight to Fairbanks and a later departure back to Anchorage.

Transportation Between Denali and Fairbanks

Q: I will be traveling by train from Fairbanks to Denali and would like to return to Fairbanks by bus. Can you help?

A: Yes! We offer a van transfer between Denali and Fairbanks. This departs Denali at 11am and arrives into Fairbanks at 1:30pm and costs $60 per person.

Northern Lights Viewing in Fairbanks

Q: I will be flying into Fairbanks in March. I want to rent a car and drive outside the city to watch the Northern Lights. How far do I need to drive and what is the best road to take so I can pull off and watch them? Are there designated viewing areas?

A: There aren’t any “designated” viewing areas. The key to finding a good location is to find a place where lights from Fairbanks aren’t affecting the darkness of the sky above you. There are many areas in the Fairbanks area which are good viewing areas…assuming the Northern Lights are out. Another suggestion is to find an area which sits up a little higher than the lights from the city such as the Birch Hill Recreation Area. Better yet, ask the hotel where you are staying at for their suggestions. Many of the hotels will also wake you up when the Northern Lights are out.

Here are a couple blogs we did on the Northern Lights and Fairbanks that you may find useful: Alaska’s Northern Lights and A Winter Visit to Fairbanks.

Rail Travel between Anchorage and Fairbanks

Q: We would like to travel from Anchorage to Fairbanks by rail. Do folks typically ride the railway both ways or fly back from Fairbanks to Anchorage?

A: The Alaska Railroad departs once a day for Fairbanks. It is about a 12 hour ride one way. You would need to stay in Fairbanks and return the next day to do roundtrip on the railroad. Your return would depend on how much time you want to spend traveling. If you are short on time I would recommend taking the train one way and flying back to Anchorage the other. If you take Alaska Airlines the return flight would be less than an hour.

If you have more time, I would recommend touring Fairbanks one day, then taking the rail to Denali the next day. Spend two nights in Denali with one full day touring Denali National Park and then return to Anchorage by bus.

Transportation Options from Fairbanks

Q: Is there transportation from Fairbanks to Copper River Princess Wilderness Lodge?

A: Transportation between Fairbanks and Copper River is very limited. I am not aware of any land transportation companies that provide this service. Your best option would be to rent a vehicle from Fairbanks and drive, but it would most likely have to be a roundtrip to Fairbanks or return the car to Anchorage and pay a one way drop off fee.

Escorted Alaska Vacation Packages

Q: Do you offer any escorted Alaska tour packages?

A: We do offer two different fully escorted tours, one is 6 nights and one is 9 nights. The Alaska Explorer 6 night tour starts in Fairbanks and ends in Anchorage. The 9 night Grand Alaska tour is the only one that starts and ends in Anchorage. These tours offer a variety of rail and bus transportation with the same travel group and escort. Hotels, tours, transportation and some meals are included.
