McKinley Princess Lodge to Talkeetna

Q: Please advise the distance from the Princess Mt. McKinley Lodge to the actual town of Talkeetna. We really didn’t want to rent a car for one day, but Talkeetna looks like an interesting town, and didn’t want to miss it!

A: It is just under 50 miles between the McKinley Princess Lodge and the town of Talkeetna. The McKinley Princess Lodge run shuttles to and from the town of Talkeetna throughout the day. It takes approximately 45 minutes each direction and you can arrange the shuttle transfer at the front desk.

Driving time Anchorage to Talkeetna

Q: What is the distance from downtown Anchorage to Talkeetna?

A: Talkeetna is about 115 miles from Anchorage. Driving time is about 2.5 hours. Talkeetna is a great place to do a flight seeing trip to Mt. McKinley!

Talkeetna in April

Q: Is the Talkeetna Alaska Lodge open April 29? Is flight seeing available then?

A: I’m sorry the lodge is closed until May 20th but flight seeing is available in Talkeetna year around. We highly recommend K2 Aviation. You can easily drive to Talkeetna for the day and return to Anchorage after the flight. Another option would be to check on Talkeetna area bed & breakfasts to see if they are open in April.

Talkeetna to Denali

Q: Is there a bus tour that I can take from the Talkeetna Lodge to see Denali National Park?

A: There is not a day tour from Talkeetna to Denali available. We do offer bus transportation service between Talkeetna and Denali National Park called the Park Connection. Once you arrive in Denali, we recommend a two night stay and a bus tour into Denali National Park.

Short Trip to Denali

Q: We have a very short amount of time but would like to see Denali. We arrive in Whittier via a cruise on a Saturday. Is it possible to get to Denali and take an afternoon tour, spend the night in the park and travel by train to Anchorage Sunday morning? What do you suggest?

A: Unfortunately there is no way to make it to Denali for an afternoon tour when you arrive by cruise ship. You could rent a car when you get to Anchorage via your cruise transfer and drive to Denali but you wouldn’t be able to do a tour. You would be limited to driving just thirteen miles into the Park. As an alternative to driving to Denali, I would suggest a visit to Talkeetna, Alaska.

I would recommend taking the Park Connection transfer from Whittier to Talkeetna. While in Talkeetna, you could take a flightseeing tour that would take you over Mt. McKinley and other spectacular peaks. Overnight at the Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge and return to Anchorage via the Park Connection on Sunday. The bus would get you back to Anchorage before 2pm. If you wanted to take the train, you would not arrive back in Anchorage on Sunday until 8:30pm.

Alaska Fast Food Restaurants

Q: Are there fast food restaurants in most towns?

A: Alaska does have some fast food chains. Anchorage and Fairbanks offer the most variety of fast food restaurants. Subway is the only fast food chain represented in Denali,Seward and Valdez. Talkeetna and Copper Center do not offer a fast food chain.

For a listing of restaurants and dining options you can go to the local visitor center sites. They will have guides for you to view on dining in these areas.

Alaska Glaciers

Q: My daughter really wants to get up close with a glacier. Is it possible to land on one, touch one or something like that?

A: Alaska is the place to come to get up close with glaciers. There are many options including flightseeing with glacier landings in Talkeetna or Denali, glacier day cruises and the Exit Glacier tour in Seward. On a glacier day cruise the boats pull up to the glaciers then stop so you can awe at them calving into the water.

We also offer a tour that includes glacier dog sledding. If you are renting a car during your Alaska vacation another unique option is a visit to Matanuska Glacier.

Men Fish While Women Shop in Alaska

Q: Is there a place for the men to fish and our wives to go shopping?

A: I would recommend stops in Anchorage, Seward or Talkeetna. They each offer different fishing opportunities as well as different choices for the wives activities. In Anchorage, the men can choose a fly in fishing trip or try their luck for salmon in Ship Creek in downtown Anchorage. If the fishing trip is on a Saturday, the wives can spend their day at the Saturday Market in downtown or if on another day they can roam the gift shops and mall all located in walking distance of our downtown Anchorage hotels. In Talkeetna, located two hours north of Anchorage, the men could take a half day guided fishing trip and the wives could take a flightseeing trip with a glacier landing. Another great option would be a halibut fishing charter in Seward Alaska for the men and a glacier and wildlife cruise for the wives. Alaska vacations offer something for everyone to enjoy!

Denali Tour Itinerary

Q: How long does it take to drive to Denali? How long should we stay to be sure to see Mt. McKinley?

A: Typically it takes about 5 1/2 to 6 hours to drive Denali National Park from Anchorage. Also, to see the sights of Denali National Park you should allow 2 to 3 nights stay in the area. Mt. McKinley cannot be seen from the park entrance area,  only on a bus tour into Denali National Park, weather permitting. The best views of the mountain are actually from Talkeetna, which is 2 1/2 hours south of Denali National Park. Our Denali tour packages include one night in Talkeetna and two nights in Denali.

Denali or Talkeetna?

Q: We are trying to decide whether to stay in Talkeetna or Denali Park? We are traveling by rail from Fairbanks and have 3 nights. Please note we will not have car at this time so are at the mercy of shuttles.

A: I think you do not need to choose between Denali and Talkeetna, rather you should visit both. I would recommend stopping in Denali for two nights so that you have enough time to see the park and its wildlife. Popular tours include hiking, wildlife viewing and rafting. Then travel to Talkeetna for one night so that you can experience the amazing views of Mt. McKinley (weather dependent). The views of the mountain are better in Talkeetna because it is closer to the mountain. Popular Talkeetna tours include flightseeing with a glacier landing and a jet boat tour. Many visitors to both Denali and Talkeetna arrive by rail so the shuttle system is easy to use. Hotel shuttles are readily available at the rail depots.
