Flying to Haines from Anchorage

Q: Is there a reasonable way to fly from Anchorage International to Haines Alaska?

A: There are no direct flights. You’ll need to fly Anchorage to Juneau on Alaska Air, then fly Juneau to Haines on one of a number of smaller air companies (in small planes). They do run a scheduled service.

Tours to Sitka Alaska

Q: Are there tours to Sitka,Alaska?

A: Sitka is a popular destination in Southeast Alaska, although it isn’t known as a packaged tour destination. Most of Sitka’s visitors arrive by cruise ship. The Sitka Convention and Visitors Bureau is a very good resource for planning a trip to the town. I would also touch base with Allen Marine Tours which is one of the larger tour companies based in Sitka.

Southeast Alaska Accommodations

Q: Do you have recommendations for accommodations in Southeast Alaska?

A: We do not work with any particular hotels in Southeast Alaska but we do offer a travel guide which includes listings of accommodations throughout that region. You can select a city, then accommodations to see a list for the area you are visiting.

Alaska Whale Watching

Q: When is the best time of year to see whales?

A: The best time to visit Alaska for whale viewing would depend on what types of whales you would like to see. The spring is excellent for seeing gray whales during their migration period. Gray whale cruises generally start in April. June, July and August are great months for viewing Orca whales particularly out of Resurrection Bay in Seward, Alaska. I would recommend a glacier and wildlife day cruise out of Seward. Whale watching is also popular in Southeast Alaska so you may want to visit the Travel Juneau website for additional information about their whale season.

Aalska Cruise Options

Q: Do you know of a 2-3 day cruise that would take us back in to inner islands to see iceburgs, whales, and other sites?

A: The most common cruises are either a 7 day Alaska cruise on a major cruise line or a day cruise through the Kenai Fjords National Park or Prince William sound. You would need to book a private charter in a destination such as Seward, Whittier or Juneau to do what you would like to do. The links will lead you to the visitors association in each destination for more information.

Skagway Rail Travel

Q:What is the best suggestion for one day train travel from Skagway?

A: There really is only one train trip from Skagway and that would be the WhitePass Railroad. This is offered as a shore excursion off of most cruise ships visiting Skagway.

Ferry Service Near Anchorage

Q: I want to fly to Juneau and go to Anchorage by boat. Will the ferry take me there?

A: There is no ferry service to Anchorage. However, you could take a ferry to Whittier, then take the Alaska Railroad to Anchorage. If you need assistance with making your reservations, I’d suggest contacting the folks at Alaska Ferry Adventures.

Southeast Alaska Rail Options

Q: We are going to Icy Strait, Hubbard Glacier, Juneau and Ketchikan. Can we get a scenic train ride in any of these places?

A: There are no rail services or tours in those Southeast Alaska locations. Many cruises also visit Skagway. There is a rail excursion in Skagway called the White Pass Rail. Here’s a link to their website http://www.wpyr.com/.

Transportation from Skagway

Q:We are traveling northbound through the Inside Passage in late June and need to get to Anchorage or Homer from Skagway. What would be the best way to do this?
A: Unfortunately, there are no car rentals that we are aware of from Skagway but you can rent a motorhome in Skagway and return it in Anchorage. Visit our Alaska RV page for more information on renting an RV in Alaska. The only other option is to fly from Skagway to Juneau, then connect on another flight to Anchorage.

Getting to Juneau

Q: Can I drive to Juneau?
A: Southeast Alaska is full of small towns most of which are isolated from the road system. The only way to access these places would be by boat or by plane. The Alaska Marine Highway Ferry System is also a great way to visit these areas.
