Alaska Whale Watching

Q: When is the best time of year to see whales?

A: The best time to visit Alaska for whale viewing would depend on what types of whales you would like to see. The spring is excellent for seeing gray whales during their migration period. Gray whale cruises generally start in April. June, July and August are great months for viewing Orca whales particularly out of Resurrection Bay in Seward, Alaska. I would recommend a glacier and wildlife day cruise out of Seward. Whale watching is also popular in Southeast Alaska so you may want to visit the Travel Juneau website for additional information about their whale season.

Can you see whales the second week of September? If so, where would be the best bet to see a whale?

Janice, yes you can but they are starting to head south for the winter as well. Juneau or Seward are probably your best bets.
