Drive from Whittier to Denali

Q: What route would you take to drive from Whittier to Denali?

A: The road that you would be traveling on between Whittier and Anchorage is called the Seward Highway, then you travel north out of Anchorage on the Glenn Highway and then take the George Parks Highway to Denali. It is about 60 miles from Whittier to Anchorage and about 240 miles from Anchorage to Denali. Plan on about 6 hours driving time. Please visit our blog on Alaska Highways for more information.

Transportation Between Anchorage and Wasilla

Q: I am interested in a shuttle that will take me from the Anchorage airport to Wasilla and return. Is that service available?

A: There isn’t any regular service between Anchorage and Wasilla. The two cities are about an hour away from each other. Outside of renting a car, your best option will likely be a limo/sedan company. Most are based in Anchorage, but I believe Alaskan Splendor is based in Wasilla.

Seward Car Rentals

Q: Are there any car rental businesses in Seward?

A: The only car rental company in Seward, Alaska is Hertz of Seward Car Rental. For more options, consider taking the Park Connection transfer to Anchorage and renting your car from Anchorage.

Denali Highway

Q: I want to drive across the Denali Highway in July. It’s unpaved. Are there any rental agencies in Anchorage that allow renters to take a vehicle on this unpaved road?

A: Unfortunately, there are no car rental agencies that I am aware of that allow travel on the Denali Highway. You must have a private vehicle or risk paying for any damage/towing fees that may occur along that road. Limited services are available on the Denali Highway. I would recommend just going up and around through Fairbanks on the paved road to avoid the possibility of incurring vehicle damage or getting stranded for a long period of time.

Transportation to Kenai

Q: I would like to travel to Kenai, Alaska by bus. Can you tell me how much that costs?

A: Unfortunately, we do not offer a bus that goes to Kenai. The only way to get to Kenai is to either fly in from Anchorage or drive. You can rent a car in Anchorage and drive down – it is about a three hour drive. There is no scheduled bus or train service to the city of Kenai.

Whittier to Valdez Day Trip

Q: Can you travel by bus to Whittier from Anchorage, board the Alaska Ferry, travel to Valdez then back, board a bus back to Anchorage all in one day?

A: Unfortunately there aren’t any buses that run daily between Anchorage and Whittier. Your best option would be renting a car in Anchorage and leaving it in Whittier for the day. Your other option would be to rent a car, board the ferry in Whittier with the car and then drive from Valdez back to Anchorage. It would be a long day trip but you would see some incredible scenery! Visit Alaska Ferry Adventures for ferry schedules. If you decide to drive be sure to invest in The Milepost, a mile-by-mile guide to the roads in Alaska.

Seward Car Rentals

Q: We will arrive in Seward and need to get to Girdwood for a 2-day stay before flying out of Anchorage airport. If we don’t take the train or bus to Girdwood, can we rent a van in Seward large enough for 8 people with luggage for 4 days and leave it in Anchorage?

A: Seward has only one car rental company – Hertz of Seward. They may or may not have a vehicle that can support your large group. Another option would be to travel to Anchorage by bus or train and then pick up your rental vehicle in Anchorage. You would avoid the one way drop off fee as well.
