Alaska Railroad Pricing

Q: Regarding prices from Anchorage to Denali by train, is this a one way fare or round trip?

A: The pricing listed on our website for rail travel is one way per person. Our vacation package prices are per person based on double occupancy (two people in a hotel room).

Flights Included?

Q: We are considering the 9 day guided tour that starts and ends in Anchorage. Are flights included in the price?

A: The price listed on our website for any of our tour packages do not include airfare. We do not book airfare so you will need to book that on your own.

Alaska Railroad Lap Riders

Q: Is a one year old who will be a lap rider charged the same price ticket for a train ride from Anchorage to Seward as a child, or is the one year old discounted?

A: A child rate is for anyone that is 11 years old and younger. Adults rates would be for anyone 12 years and older. However, if you intend to keep a child under the age of 2 on your lap there would be no fee for them on the Alaska Railroad. The Park Connection does charge for children under 2 because they are required to have their own seat in a car seat.

Alaska Railroad to Denali

Q: Does the Alaska Railroad offer a one day round trip to Denali and back to Anchorage?

A: The Alaska Railroad does not offer a round trip train service to Denali. The one way trip is 8 hours long, departing Anchorage at 8:00am and arriving at 4:00pm. The train returns the following day, departing Denali at 12:25pm and arriving back in Anchorage about 8:00pm. You can take a round trip train from Anchorage to Talkeetna, which is on the south side of Denali Park and an excellent location to see Mt. McKinley if the weather is clear.  See our blog for information on a great day trip to Talkeetna!

Alaska Bus Travel Pricing

Q: Are the prices we see listed for bus travel one way or round trip?

A: The prices listed for motorcoach travel with Alaska Tour & Travel are all one way fares. We do however have a roundtrip special between Anchorage and Seward if you go there and back in the same day.

Seward to Anchorage Transportation

Q: I plan on taking the Alaska railroad from Anchorage to Seward. Is there a bus or train that will take me back to Anchorage the next day?

A: I would recommend taking a bus back to Anchorage as it follows a different route than the train for a portion of the trip. This will allow you to see the most scenery. The Park Connection Motorcoach departs twice daily from Seward, once at 10:30am and once at 6:30pm. The train runs back to Anchorage once per day at 6:00pm.

Fairbanks to Vancouver

Q: How can I get from Fairbanks to Vancouver BC without driving or flying?

A: I would recommend taking the Alaska Railroad between Fairbanks and Whittier and a 7-day Alaska cruise between Whittier and Vancouver. You would need two days to do the rail travel with an overnight in Anchorage. The rail from Fairbanks to Anchorage is a twelve hour trip arriving into Anchorage at about 8pm. The next morning you could take the rail from Anchorage to Whittier to board the cruise ship.

Getting Around Seward

Q: Can you get around Seward without a car?

A: From one end of Seward to the other it is about a mile. You can certainly walk around with no problems. If you are staying at the Seward Windsong Lodge they have curtsey shuttles that run a loop around town.

Seward to Whittier Transportation

Q: Is there any kind of transportation from Seward to Whittier?

A: There is no direct transportation from Seward to Whittier either by train or motorcoach. You could try renting a car in Seward with Hertz but I am not sure that they would allow you to drop off the car in Whittier. Your best option would be to take the Park Connection bus to Anchorage and then rent a car from Avis which does allow drop off in Whittier. Good luck!

Alaska Railroad Reservations

Q: How far in advance should I puchase a ticket for the railroad from Anchorage to Denali?

A: I would encourage you to make your train reservations as early as possible particularly if you are interested in the GoldStar dome service. We are currently accepting reservations for the 2013 summer season and have several dates that have sold out for the GoldStar seats.
