Fastest Route from Fairbanks to Anchorage

Q: What is the fastest way to get to Fairbanks from Anchorage and how long is the trip?

A: The fastest way to get to Fairbanks is by airplane. There are multiple flights daily between Anchorage and Fairbanks. The flight is about 50 minutes. Other, more scenic options include traveling by road or by rail. The Alaska Railroad departs Anchorage at 8:00am and arrives in Fairbanks at 8:00pm. If you rent a car, it is 358 miles by road and will take approximately 7 hours.

Rail from Anchorage to Fairbanks

Q: I would like information on the Alaskan train from Anchorage to Fairbanks. Can we fly into Anchorage ride the train to Fairbanks and fly home from Fairbanks?

A: The Alaska Railroad offers a train from Anchorage to Fairbanks that departs daily from mid-May to mid-September. It a 12-hour trip and you can choose from standard service or Gold Star service. There are some airlines that offer flights direct from Fairbanks to destinations outside of Alaska but they are fairly limited. For more flight options, you should consider flying to Anchorage and then booking your flight home from there.

If you are traveling all the way to Alaska, I would recommend seeing more of the sights – in particular Denali National Park. Fairbanks Winter Travel

Q: Is weather in Fairbanks late December and early January too bad for travel there? Are hotels open? I would like to see northern lights & take a dog sled tour.

A: We specialize in summer travel but I can provide some information that may be helpful. Fairbanks is a unique winter destination and can be fun as long as you are prepared for the cold!

There are plenty of hotels open year round in Fairbanks. For trips specifically to view the northern lights I would recommend contacting the Northern Alaska Tour Company. They do trips throughout the winter for northern lights viewings. As for other information about Fairbanks, tours and weather I suggest you visit the website of their visitor center.

Alaska Fast Food Restaurants

Q: Are there fast food restaurants in most towns?

A: Alaska does have some fast food chains. Anchorage and Fairbanks offer the most variety of fast food restaurants. Subway is the only fast food chain represented in Denali,Seward and Valdez. Talkeetna and Copper Center do not offer a fast food chain.

For a listing of restaurants and dining options you can go to the local visitor center sites. They will have guides for you to view on dining in these areas.

Transportation to and from Fairbanks Alaska

Q: Can we fly into Anchorage, ride the train to Fairbanks and fly home from Fairbanks?

A: You can ride the Alaska Railroad from Anchorage to Fairbanks. You can choose from standard service or the Gold Star service. There are some flights that go direct from Fairbanks to destinations in the lower 48 states, but they are more limited than flying out of Anchorage. There are many flights daily between Anchorage and Fairbanks and the flight time is just under an hour. You could certainly take the railroad to Fairbanks and then fly to Anchorage and then on to your final destination.

Q: We would like to travel from Anchorage to Fairbanks to Valdez on a five day visit. We would like to travel mostly by rail. How can we do this?

A: You can take the train from Anchorage to Fairbanks. There is no rail line from Fairbanks to Valdez so you would need to rent a car in Fairbanks to continue your journey to Valdez. You could drop the car off in Anchorage but would have to pay a one-way rental fee. A: The tours and activities we book tours only operate during the summer travel season. For ideas on what to do in Fairbanks in┬áMarch I would recommend contacting the Fairbanks Visitor’s Bureau or visiting our Alaska Travel Guide for winter travel information.

Arctic Circle Fuel Stops

Q: Are there any places between Fairbanks and the Arctic Circle that I can refuel my motorcycle?

A: Yes there are. The Yukon River Camp at Mile 56 of the Dalton Highway normally has fuel as does the Coldfoot Camp at mile 175 which is past the Arctic Circle BLM Wayside – not sure where you are planning on turning around. You may want to call them before you go to make sure they’ve had a recent fuel delivery.

Whitehorse to Fairbanks Transportation

Q: Are there coach lines or other transportation between Whitehorse and Fairbanks?

A: Alaska Yukon Trails provides transportation between these two cities.

Arctic Circle Sign

Q: How many miles is the arctic circle sign from Fairbanks, AK?

A: The Arctic Circle Sign is located at the Arctic Circle BLM Wayside. It is 199 miles north of Fairbanks on the Dalton Highway.
